Tag Contacts in iPhone with Emoji
Last night I was messing around on the net and I ran across a couple blogs that were talking about “Emoji”. They’re emoticons for the iPhone, and they’re on every iPhone v2.2.
You can send them to anyone else that has an iPhone running v2.2 as well. More than sending them in text messages, you can use them anywhere on the iPhone. This got me thinking, and I came up with this (which to me is freaking awesome =)
I have “tagged” all my contacts with various icons. So I can search for the the icon and all the contacts with that icon are filtered! I know there’s groups, but they’re lame, and you can only tell group membership when you’re looking in the group itself. With this I can see the tags on the contacts screen, in my phone history / favorites list, and they show up when they call me. Anywhere the name is, the tags follow =)
If you do this, there are two things to make sure of.
- If you sync your contacts through MobileMe or something, all your contacts in Address Book and such will have funny characters at the end of their names.
- You have to put a space between each tag so that they can be searched independently. If you don’t, they will be searched as a group (which is another neat-o trick).
Here’s the run-through:
1. Install “Emoji” app through Cydia on a Jailbroken iphone. Just search for the app and install it.

2. After the app is installed, open the Settings App and navigate here:
General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Japanese
Then toggle “Emoji” to ON

3. Now open your SMS app and send a text message! The emoticons should be showing. If not, tap the Globe icon to toggle between your regular keyboard and the emoticons.

(That’s all you have to do to get Emoji working. For the tagging part, keep reading!)
4. Open your contacts list and choose a contact to add a tag too. Tap on the Edit button, then edit the contact’s last name. Add a space, then add the emoticon to represent your tag (add as many as you want, but make sure you put a space between them). Then tap Save. You’ll have something like this:

The tags I have here represent: Beer = Drinking buddy, Skull = Close Friend, Waves = Tattoo Artist, and iPhone = they have an iPhone
5. Now when you’re in your contact list, go to the top (tap the menu bar to go right to it) and tap in the Search box. In the example below, I’m searching for all my Good Friends that are Tattoo Artists:

Pretty awesome huh?
Here’s another screen shot of my Favorites list in the Phone App:

You can see that I have the Fork and Knife icon to represent Food. So I can quickly search for food places. The ideas here are limitless! I’m so happy I’m able to do this, and it got me thinking that all phones should have some type of tagging system! This is just too awesome =)
