Send Mail Function for VB.NET (ASP.NET)

For some reason, I wasn’t able to figure this simple little process out on my own with the help of Google. Everything I found was way over complicated. This is short, sweet, and works =)

Public Shared Sub SendMail(ByVal fromaddress As String, ByVal toaddress As String, ByVal body As String, ByVal subject As String)
Dim mailServer As String = "smtp.mailserver.com"
Dim message As MailMessage = New MailMessage(fromaddress, toaddress, subject, body)
Dim mailClient As SmtpClient = New SmtpClient

    message.IsBodyHtml = True
    mailClient.Host = mailServer
    mailClient.Send(message)
    message.Dispose()
End Sub

BAM! Thanks Joe!

How to Take PhotoBooth Pics with no Flash (OS X)

photo-booth-icon.jpg

The photobooth app is pretty cool, and handy. But there’s 3 things that bother me about it. The first is I like to control my lighting. When the “flash” kicks off, it washes everything out, and looks like crap. The second is waiting for the count down… just take it! The third is that everything is mirrored. Has a tendency to get irritating when taking photos with text involved.

Well, thankfully there’s a way to solve the first two (from Tekzilla):

Hold down the shift key when you press the take picture button and your picture will be taken without using the flash. If you hold down the option key when you press the take picture button your picture will be taken without using the count-down delay. If you hold down both the shift and options keys, your picture will be taken immediately and without the flash.

As for the mirroring, I still have to resort to Photoshop.

LEGO: Indiana Jones (360)

I picked up LEGO: Indian Jones today at lunch with high hope that it would be as fun as the LEGO: Star Wars game was.

I’m pleased to say that it’s a hit. It’s a ton of fun, and has the exact same game play as the star wars game. The graphics are “amazing”, and the story deviates from the movies a bit, but overall, it’s fun!

I only have about 3 hours into the game, but I’m already addicted. There’s so many little things that you can work on throughout all the levels. And of course all the characters to unlock and go back through with to unlock even more. I have a feeling that this game will tide me over for a while =)

Testing Twitter Tools!

Twitter tools is a Wordpress plugin that allows you to crate blog posts from your Twitter posts, and send Tweets every time you post a new blog message. So far, it’s pretty cool. I like the daily wrap-up’s. I’ve turned off the posting for each tweet, because it’s posting all my replies too. I don’t think that’s necessary, and it just creates clutter. I’ll learn a little PHP to mod it up and then I’ll enable it =)

Drugs and Alcohol

The other day, I was have a horrible allergy attack, and I couldn’t focus on work at all. So I headed over to Duane Reade (it’s like Wallgreens for NYC), to pick up some allergy meds. My friend Mike told me about Zyrtec and how awesome it was. So I picked up a bottle. Why such a huge bottle for 15 tiny pills (about the size of a grain of rice), i dunno. Anyway, I took one. Didn’t work. About 2 hours later I took another. Yes I know it says 1 per 24 hour period, but I’m a bigger guy =). Still nothing. I tried to buy some Benadryl-D, but you can’t buy it without ID. WTF is that all about?! Lame. So I chose to suffer for the rest of the day.

On my way home, I picked up a six-pack of smirnoff ice (the Strawberry ones). I had about two and a half before I felt it. It was nice, but weird. I felt intensely drunk / loopy. My girlfriend and roommate both said I was acting like I was drunk / high. FYI: My alcohol tolerance is really high. Like, 5 shots of Jegermeister before I get a buzz.

So there was something in the mixture of Zyrtec and alcohol. Not sure if I should be recommending it. But if you happen to take more pills that you’re supposed to, and then consume some drinks a few hours later, prepare for weirdness!

PS. I have no clue what this does to your body / brain. Probably nothing good.

Emptying (Stubborn) Trash in OS X

Every once in a while, I’ll get files in my Trash that will never leave when I empty it. I’ll get prompted with an error about how the file can’t be removed, and to continue deleting the other files.

I don’t like this.

So, pop into Terminal and go to :

# cd /Users/[Account Name]/.Trash/

issue:

# rm -rf *

That should clear it up. If it’s a permissions issue, just do it as a sudo command:

# sudo rm -rf *

That should clear it up =)

The “Red Thing”

If you’re a drinker, you gotta try one of these “Red Things”. It was a drink of lore, but I finally got the low down after a Russian Drink off and a trip through the Himalayas.

- Vodka
- Rum
- Gin
- Tequila
- Triple Sec
- Apple Pucker
- Watermelon Vodka
- Southern Comfort
- Amaretto
- Chambord
- Pineapple Juice
- Cranberry Juice

Do a one second pour for each, and fill with the juices. Shake and serve over rocks.

You’re welcome =)

Got my new Netflix Roku box

This thing is amazing! I just received it earlier in the week. They have over 10,000+ movies available.

The thing is $99 and runs off of your current netflix account. It’s pretty sweet the way it works too.

You can hook it up to the TV with component, composite, S-Video, or HDMI. It also has an Ethernet port and built-in WiFi. I find the connection to be stronger with a wired connection. I currently have it hooked up via composite and the quality is DVD quality.

It’s pretty nifty the way it works too. You add the movies you want to watch to an Instant Queue on the Netflix site, and they instantly appear on the Roku box. When you start to watch a movie, it takes about 30 seconds to buffer the stream, but then you’re ready to go. The cool thing that I like a lot is the skipping forward / backward feature. It’s like a cross between fastforwarding and scene selection. You see a little screenshot for about every 30 seconds. So you can skip right to where you want to start watching.

One tip for any that puts it behind a router, make sure that your DNS settings are right. I had a static DNS IP for DNS #1 and the true dynamic DNS server IP’s for 2 and 3. The Roku box would recognize a connection, but the “Connection to the Internet” part would fail. I fixed up the DNS thing to just dynamic, and it’s all set. The two flashing lights was driving me nuts.

If you like movies, you need this!
